Nils is a seasoned multidisciplinary scientist with a flair for physics, engineering, innovation and business. At M Squared, he leads the Innovation division and plays a pivotal role in developing technologies for new and emerging markets.

Under Nils' leadership, M Squared Innovation is scaling at pace. The innovation team has grown to over 35 high-level PhD graduates and scientists from a range of physics backgrounds. He also provides mentorship for knowledge transfer students and Marie Curie Fellows.

Nils is unrelenting in his desire to take new ideas out into the real world.

Nils has also overseen the development of a variety of new photonics products (notably instrumentation and lasers) as well as new quantum technology systems - including several UK commercial firsts. In quantum too, Nils is instrumental in managing M Squared's remit as part of the UK Government’s quantum initiative and is on the Quantum Technologies Special Interest Group UK Advisory Board.

Nils is unrelenting in his desire to take new ideas out into the real world, gaining essential market feedback, refining designs, improving software and systems and helping to ensure that new products are viable and market-ready. A strong focus on open innovation has seen him establish partnerships and facilitate collaborations with more than 100 partners globally.

In recognition of his efforts, Nils was recently awarded the Dennis Gabor Medal from the Institute of Physics for his work applying physics in an industrial context. Nils holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Strathclyde and a Diploma in Mechatroniks from Fachhochschule Kiel in Germany.
